Wedding Trends: Metallics

After 5 Events Wedding Planning Boutique

Metallics have been a part of decorative history for as long as we can tell. Everything from jewelry to dishes and even furniture have been made from a wide variety of metals in every color imaginable. Although the particular metallic color and finish trends change from year to year, metallics are one trend that never goes away.

According to Bridal Guide’s 2016 Trend Report, the reason metallics always find a place in home or event decor is their versatility. There is a metallic for every occasion from rustic to black tie.

The basic metallics used in event decor include:

  • Gold

  • Silver

  • Copper

  • Brass

  • Bronze

  • Rose Gold

  • White Gold

  • Platinum

Wedding experts at The Knot suggest copper is the hottest metallic this season while Bridal Guide places its vote with Rose Gold. Event design trends often take cues from the fashion world. The most widely used metallic on the runways at New York Fashion Week were gold metallics. No matter your preference, it is clear that the silver-colored family of metals are not on trend for 2016.

With finishes ranging from the softer look of a brushed metal to the shiny feel of polished metals, there is something for everyone. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out these tips for adding metallics to popular themes.

  • Rustic - Serve custom cocktails in copper mugs

  • Black Tie - Embellish place settings with gold placemats and napkin rings

  • Winter - Edge a white aisle runner with silver satin

  • Vintage - Use rose gold or brass candelabras for centerpieces

  • Beach - Wear brushed gold sandals and accessories

Modern party planners consider most metallics to be neutrals that can easily replace black, gray, white, or brown in color schemes. Throw out any preconceived notions and explore the new world of metallics. Choose one to highlight or mix metallics to create an ultralux look sure to wow guests. With decorative touches from metal napkin rings to tablecloths available in metallic colors, this trend can easily fit into any theme and budget.

Wedding Etiquette

Wedding season is such a fun and exciting time that everyone looks forward to. We all love receiving invitations in the mail and awaiting the big day. With wedding season in Western New York approaching us quickly, here are a few Do's and Don'ts to remember at the weddings you'll be attending. Make sure to be the guest that everyone wants to invite to their wedding. By following these you definitely will be. Happy Wedding Season <3

When attending a wedding this season remember these Do's and Don'ts of being a wedding guest!

Do's:

RSPV- The Bride and Groom will appreciate you RSPV'ing immediately. With all the stress they have going on planning the wedding, the last thing they want to do is track you down to ask you if you're coming to the wedding. Make the wedding planning process that much easier on them and RSPV as soon as possible.

Dress as the style the invitation states- There's nothing worse than inviting guests to a black tie wedding and having them show up to the reception wearing a summer dress. Or if you were invited to a wedding where you know you'll be on grass don't wear a long gown and pointy heels. You'll spend more time digging your feet out of the grass than enjoying the wedding. Dress for the occasion :)

Arrive on time to the ceremony- The only person allowed to be late to the ceremony is the bride! You shouldn't be walking in after the ceremony has started and definitely not when the bride is about to walk in. Rule of thumbs, try to get there 20-30 minutes before the start time of the ceremony. That way you're guaranteed a good seat and can mingle with family and friends before the ceremony starts.

Have as much fun as possible- Weddings are for celebrating and having fun with family and friends. Make sure the bride and groom are having fun out on the dance floor and be sure to join them. Just make sure to have fun within reason!

Dont's:

Don't bring an unexpected guest- It's never appropriate to show up the day of the wedding with a guest that wasn't invited. If you haven't stated that you're bring a +1 then leave them at home. No one should have to be scrambling to find your date a seat at the reception.

Don't wear white - The only person at the wedding wearing white should be the bride. We all know white dresses are adorable and look great on tan skin, but leave them at home. It may be an old rule but it's a rule that should always be followed. It's her special day and she should be the one standing out from the rest.

Don't bring children to an adult only reception- It may be tough to find a babysitter or you may not want to leave them at home but if the wedding invitation states that it's an adults only…then it's an adults only. Don't call the bride and groom and put them in a tough position. Everyone deserves a night without kids every once in a while.

Bridesmaid Dresses in 2015

Choosing your bridesmaid dresses can be a very difficult and grueling process if you're not sure what you want or what's still in style. We are here to show you all the new trends for weddings this year. Bridesmaids play a big role in your special day so make sure they look beautiful standing next to you and in these dresses they will be sure to do that, but don't worry no one can out shine a beautiful bride in her dress <3

Pastels are making a statement this year. Whether it's one color of pastel, or different pastels on each of your bridesmaids, these colors are here to stay and we love it. If your feeling adventurous, choose a different pastel color for each bridesmaid. They will look beautiful individually and all together stand out from the rest. Ever hear the saying, "some colors don't look great on everyone"?Now you don't have to worry about this. By having different colors or different versions of a pastel color each bridesmaid can have her own individual look. Or if you love a certain pastel color, choose one and incorporate beautiful pastels into your wedding. These soft colors will make your wedding look very elegant and tasteful. What girl doesn't love pastels? Now we can enjoy them all the time instead of just in the spring!

Looking for little fun and excitement in your bridesmaid dresses? Try adding a different design to the back of the dress. Whether it's criss-cross-back straps or a key-hole back, these dresses will stand out for sure. Everyone loves showing off their back and wearing dresses that do just that. Now incorporate this amazing trend into your bridesmaid dresses. The dress with the heart shaped back cut out is an adorable piece to add to your very special day.

2015 Wedding Invitations

Each year the wedding invitations are changing more and more. The 2015 wedding season in Western New York is approaching us, and that means invitations galore. This year some trends we are seeing are watercolors, pastel hues, flowers, and silver replacing gold lettering. Take a look at these trends and some of the new updated invitations we have added to our collection here at After 5 Events.

These new wedding invitations are full of personality and energy. Each one is unique from the other and that is what we love about them so much. The rustic inspiration that is appearing in the 2015 wedding trends is also evident in these invitations. But along with design, there is a great focus on the different fonts used with more emphasis and importance to what is being written on them, thus becoming the focal point.

The black invitation with the flower wreath wrapped around the future "Mr. & Mrs." names is something so different than ever seen before. With this specific invitation you can customize the flowers in the wreath and add in the cute accommodation cards for your guests. The font used in this invitation stands out and adds an amazing touch to the finished product. What's not to love about that?!

For more information about these specific invitations pictured here, or all the other invitations we have, call to make an appointment with Gabby today! By doing so you'll be sure to have an invitation that stands out from all the rest and makes your wedding day extra special.

Happy Wedding Planning,

Xo Sarah :)

New year, same idea. Burlap and lace is here to stay. Planning to have an outdoor wedding in Buffalo, New York and have a rustic side to you? Or just love lace and burlap together? Try these new creative ideas when planning a wedding with burlap and lace included and you'll be sure to have a Western New York wedding that sticks out!

Burlap and lace. These two items put together are becoming a major centerpiece to base your weddings around. From invitations, to wedding cakes, decorations and everything in between, burlap and lace is making a statement once again. Instead of satin bows, try putting burlap with some lace together and making gorgeous yet still simple bows to hang on chairs down the aisle. Or let your rustic side shine through and create your wedding invitations with different burlap and lace pieces. Let your creativity shine through and put your special touches on your very special day.

Wedding Trend Alert: Mix & Match Bridesmaids Dresses

Slowly the days of matching bridesmaids dresses are fading. Many brides are showing how being unique can be oh-so chic. Whether you’re mixing patterns and solids, going ombré or choosing a different style dress for each lady, going the non-traditional route for your bridal party is the newest in wedding trends. Your wedding party is basically the backdrop for extraordinary photos, so why not get creative?

We are loving the idea of a different style dress for each bridesmaid, simply because not everyone has the same body type. Although, you can certainly find a dress that will cover every body, it doesn't necessarily mean it will look good on every body. You want your girls feeling as confident as you are on your big day, and this is the perfect way to do just that!

Another trend we are seeing is highlighting the Maid of Honor in an accent dress. Whether it’s a different color in the same color scheme or just a completely different style from the rest, highlighting your MOH is a great way to set her apart from the others. After all, she’s the one by your side throughout your entire wedding journey!

If you’re allowing the girls to pick their own dresses, be sure to designate a specific color scheme, fabric and length. This works especially if you are going with the same color for each girl, just a different style. Remember, a charcoal gray in taffeta looks completely different than a charcoal gray in chiffon. Likewise, if three out of five ladies have a floor length gown, one is in tea-length and another in cocktail, things can start looking unpolished.

Bridesmaids dresses are a great expense, but if they are chosen properly with each girl in mind, your ladies will be able to wear their dresses for other occasions, instead of saying “I can always shorten it and wear it again” (we all know that no one actually gets around to it).

Be sure to do your research and try it out. It will definitely pay off with these tips in mind J

Thanks for reading!

'Tis the season for graduation parties!

Summertime in Buffalo is filled with fun times: BBQs, outdoor weddings, and of course, no snow! It's also time to celebrate graduation season. When we were asked to come back and design another graduation party for Janet Snyder, radio host for Kiss 98.5, this time for her son Patrick, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to help her out again!

With accent colors of red and gold with just a touch of sparkle, the outdoor space was completely transformed. Pinterest-inspired "diploma-wrapped" Smarties and chalkboard centerpieces added a nice personal touch. Giancarlo's provided a slider bar, Lloyd's Food Truck prepared their one-of-a-kind tacos, and there was even an old-fashioned kettle corn stand. Top it off with a delicious candy display accompanied by a giant ice sculpture and delectable Georgetown Cupcakes, the guests were surely in for a special treat.

We had such a wonderful time helping out with this exciting celebration and look forward to working with Janet again in the future!

Congratulations to all the high school graduates and go Cornell :)

Junide & Harlan's glamorous Buffalo NY Wedding

Buffalo NY wedding at Hotel Lafayette
Junide and Harlan at the stunning Hotel Lafayette

It was my absolute pleasure to work with this amazing couple for over a year and a half planning their ultra elegant, glamorous #buffalony #wedding ceremony and reception. Junide is in the fashion industry (every planner's dream client), and has the most exquisite taste.

Their wedding ceremony began at one of my very favorite hidden gems in Buffalo, Karpeles Manuscript Museum, and continued at the swanky Hotel at the Lafayette. It was a rather large bridal party, about 25 members; they are a very popular couple! The reception was filled with sparkle and glitz with mini diamonds hidden everywhere. The colors were yellow and black and the centerpieces were completely over the top, literally about 5 feet tall!! Hints of black and white damask were infused in handmade napkin rings and the sweetheart table set upon the stage in the ballroom. More pictures to come. We cannot wait! Congrats to this amzing couple and now, our friends :)

Reasons why we LOVE Winter Weddings

After 5 Events Winter Wedding
Kristen and Aaron Wedding by After 5 Events

Winter weddings are not something particularly common in Buffalo.  The fact that they are so uncommon is exactly why we love them! It allows us to get creative and truly think "outside of the box," something that After 5 Events is proudly known for.

When I think of winter, there are many images that flood my mind. I think of crackling fireplaces, lots of glitter and sparkle (both of inside and out),  millions of candles, cozy fabrics and romantic cuddly evenings, the smell of cinnamon, comfort food and so much more!

Winter Wedding by After 5 Events
Aaron and Kristen Wedding. After 5 Events

Being that winter is such a time for reflection and romance, I consider it one of the most ideal times for a wedding.

Here are a few more bonuses for choosing a winter wedding:

1) DISCOUNTS - Many wedding vendors (including After 5 Events) offer discounts for winter weddings because it does not fall into Buffalo's typical wedding season.

2) Abundance of family - As you know, many families make special arrangements this time of year to travel and spend time together. Your wedding would be the perfect reason to get together and you won't have to worry about breaking anyone's summer vacation plans.

3) Romance - We have already touched upon the facts that the scenes, scents, and intimacy of the snowy season make the perfect backdrop for a stunning ceremony and reception. Even our friends at Phenomenon Events and Promotions agree that some of the most fantastic photography is captured during the winter months. Check them out at:

http://www.phenomenonevents.com/

If traveling during your winter wedding day is a concern to you, I recommend choosing one location for both your ceremony and reception. We have a list of venues perfect for this request.

Contact us today for more information, planning tips and information on our winter wedding discounts.  Our consultations are always complimentary!

Happy planning  :)

Boho-chic amazing-ness!

After 5 Events Buffalo Wedding Photo
Tammy and Justin

We recently completed a wedding for a fantastic boho-chic couple. The ceremony and reception took place at the sweetest venue (the groom's parents' house and his childhood home). The property was amazingly beautiful. We had an enourmous tented reception area that was lit just perfectly and contained custom bunting flags throughout. Long farm tables were used instead of traditional round and runners were made of burlap and lace. Mahogany chivari chairs were brought in to add some formality and fresh wildflowers were spread throughout. The bar area was built on top of 2 huge whisky barrels and fit the space just perfectly. Favors were custom-made jars of jam and some of the other personal touches included a whisky tasting station, smores station, yard games, dessert buffet as well as many others.

For the ceremony, guests were led down a beautiful path lined with white flags leading to the rear of the property. There was a huge pond with the most adorable wooden bride across. The bride and groom said their "I do's" on top of the bridge and even toasted by sharing a glass of 100-year-old scotch symbolizing the "blending" of two families. It was truly memorable!

2013 Wedding Trend Alert!

2103 Wedding trends
2013 most popular wedding flower: Peony (image by Thayer Allyson Gowdy)

Happy New Year everyone! With the beginning of the new year comes the same old question: "What are the top wedding trends going to be"?

You might be surprised to know that this year's top flower is the same as the last! The very romantic, lush, and flirty peony has been the favorite for 2 years running.

One drawback to this beautiful bud is that it only blooms 2 months out of the year, which can make it difficult to get ahold of.

Have no fear though because if you love this look, you can easily duplicate it with the garden rose which is just as beautiful and much more readily available  ;)

Fall is quickly approaching and before you know it, it will be time for the new year! Naturally, the most popular question that I have been asked recently is: "What are the most popular wedding trends for 2013"?

There are many, of course, but when it comes to color, the answer is MINT! Hints of mint are showing up everywhere from gowns, to tables, invitations and menus. It's easy to understand why, both the sight and smells prove to be very refreshing!

So whether or not you're a fan of mint, be sure to check back for more 2013 trends! As always After 5 Events would love to be a part of your special day :)

Custom Candy Buffet Inspiration

navy, hot pink, and gold
zenadiadesign.com

I have to admit, when I got a call about an event with a navy, hot pink, and gold color scheme, I was a little apprehensive. I truly don't think that I have personally seen those three colors put together, ever! So I decided to hunt around and find any images that incorporated those colors.

When I stumbled upon these pictures, I was absolutely delighted with the results! They seem to have a very classy and preppy feel that I was not expecting. Based on this inspiration, I was able to create a custom candy buffet that exceeded the client's expectations as well as my own! And to top it all off, this is now one of my favorite color schemes of all time! Thanks for reading and always embrace your creativity :)

Cool Cubes!

Fruity ice cubes add a great look and taste!
Fruity ice cubes add a great look and taste!

Throwing a memorable party is all in the details. I brought a punch to a Father's Day cookout last weekend and if it hadn't been out of town, I would have loved to use this tip!

Simply slice the fruit of your choice (lemons, limes and oranges work great), layer them in muffin cups, and fill 2/3 with water or non-alcoholic punch. Freeze your cups and the result is a batch of beautiful cubes that are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. Your guests are sure to notice and I'll even bet you'll be asked for the recipe :)

Outdoor Table Menus

Outdoor Reception Table Menus

Here's a great tip that doubles as a space saver! When planning for an outdoor dinner party or wedding reception, use "anchored" table menus.

They will prevent you from having to combat the elements when placed under a place setting, even on a very breezy day! I also really like these because they leave extra room on the table for decor (perfect in space saving situations) and are very unconventional!

Enjoy!

A Little Thoughtfulness Goes a Long Way

personal bridesmaid invite
Handwritten Bridesmaid Request

It is often the small things that matter most in life and it seems, at times, that these things are often overlooked in today's busy lifestyles. Here is just one very simple way of making someone feel special (someone who is certainly very special to you)!

Instead of the typical phone call to your loved ones asking them to be a part of your bridal party, why not send a personal handwritten note (yes people still do that!)? It is a little extra effort that certainly goes a long way and will definitely be appreciated long after your wedding day!

Good luck and thanks for reading!

Edible Potted Plants??

edible garden party plants
Creative Garden Party Food

Let's just say it's not what it looks like! These mini potted plants are the perfect dessert for any springtime, Earth day, garden party, etc. The flowers are all edible and there are a long list to choose from including: camomile, dandelion, hibiscus, and the list goes on!

The "mud" is made of chocolate pudding and the "dirt" is cookie crumbs. The "pots" look best when a clear material is used (either plastic or glass), but feel free to get creative!

Bon appetit!

From Wedding Day to Prom Night??

www.glassslipperproject.org
Finally! A second use for all those brides maids dresses

We've all been there, spending hundreds of dollars on a bridesmaids dress that we swear we will wear again, only to find it hanging in the back of our closet years later.

I am so excited to share that the geniuses at www.glassslipperproject.org have finally come up with a solution that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside!

The Glass Slipper Project is an organization that accepts gently used formal dresses and repurposes them to underprivileged teenage girls who cannot otherwise afford to go to their senior proms. The GSP also accepts shoes and accessories and donates these to the cause as well.

Please keep this in mind while working on your spring cleaning!

Couldn't be "simpler" centerpieces!

carved tree centerpieces
Simple Centerpieces

How adorable are these "tree carving" centerpieces!? They are also just about the most inexpensive to make and easiest that I have ever seen.

What I love the most is that they use all recycled materials. They are actually made of tin (soup/vegetable) cans. What a wonderful way to reuse and repurpose while displaying your love for each other.

We would be thrilled to implement these into your engagement party, bridal shower, or wedding centerpieces. For these or other great ideas give us a call today and happy planning! :)

Out with the old, in with the new! A super cool twist on the old wedding reception "candy bar"

wedding reception popcorn bar
Popcorn Bar

I am so happy to see that wedding reception "candy bars" are becoming a thing of the past.

Like most things, what started out as an innovative and fun idea has now become overdone and mundane.

I am ecstatic to see the new twist on this, and it is a popcorn bar! The flavors and combinations are endless, from savory to sweet and everything in-between! It is also very transportable and affordable (unlike the typical pounds and pounds of candy) not to mention healthier too!

Who wouldn't enjoy this as a late night snack after a long night of dancing and cocktails, or during a bridal shower while the bride is opening her gifts?

I will be displaying my first popcorn bar at a bridal shower in May and can't wait!

Decorating With Wallpaper

Decorating with wallpaper is such a unique and inexpensive way to put some flair into your wedding decor!

It is so versatile and can be used as pictured above as an isle runner or on chair backs.

Another exciting way to use wallpaper for your wedding is to use it as a table runner. It looks particularly beautiful if you wrap glass or plastic centerpiece holders in a corresponding pattern.

Good luck!
